My Cannondale commuter has developed a bit of a rattle over rough cycle paths. I'm [fairly] certain it's slightly loose bottle cage bosses on the down tube rattling inside the tube. I can't do them up properly tight - the cage bolts get fully home but then just spin.

Is there any remedy for this? I can't think of anything myself but I really really hate a rattly bike....

Easy...had the same problem on my Ti Colnago.

Place a washer that has a hole big enough to go round the boss part of the frame...and thick enough to rise above the boss. Then mount your bottle cage as normal. The cage rests on the washer, the bolt pulls the loose boss against the frame and no more rattles...it is also possible the cage will hide the washer.

Thanks for the advice...I'll probably try both of those solutions.

Rob - if that Ti Colnago ever comes up for sale...drop me a pm will you!

Cheers

Hold the bosses with long nose pliers....unless the bosses are countersunk in which case you'll need to try pulling the bolt while you turn it with pliers rather than allen key..

Take it to a frame builder (argos/mercian etc.) and they will fix it in 15 minutes with a new boss. Might have to wait a few weeks though if they are busy.

ok, if I understand you, it is the threaded insert in the frame that is spinning?

If so, then you will nevere get the bolt tight and if you do, how will you undo it?

You need to either try glueing them, epxoy glue may be strong for this or else replace them.

There are things call rivet nuts - basically a rivet with a thread that needs a special tool (actually you can do it using a couple of nuts) that you fit and then do up - as you do up, there is a collapsible section that is pulled against the inside of the tube to stop the thing from spinning.

Most likely you will have either 4 or 5 mm bolts I cannot recall what side hole they fit in, offhand goes into 7 mm hole - so you would need to drill the tube - framebulders I think use different ones that a welded on?

They come in steel and aluminium - if you know what size you need, I should have one of these in aluminium that I can pop in the post to you.

I think a photo is needed to see exactly what the arrangement is....because depending on the situation there is no reason why a washer and pliers or even a small screwdriver to stop the threaded part moving will be enough to solve your problem like it did mine.

I'll try the plyers tonight and report back.
