I've been out on my new bike twice now and think I have a problem with the right shifter?

When I use my right thumb to shift down, it doesn't return to it's original position, it just goes further forward with each click, until it gets too far I have to pull it back so I can shift down again. The trigger to shift up is fine.

The only thing is that, could be me though imagining it, is sometimes I shift down and it feels like it has moved down two gears, instead of 1, as it goes from a bit tough to my legs going around insanely fast!

The shifter is Shimano SL-M310(8s) (according to http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-gb/bikes/model/2014.giant.escape.2/14980/66557/#specifications )

I'll be going back in a couple of months for a check/service on the bike, but wondered if there is anything obvious I can do or if I should wait or get it seen to immediately.

I'd take it back now and then again for the 6 week service

Sounds like a faulty shifter, I can't imagine why the down shift lever would not return to it's starting position...at the very least I'd call the bike shop and describe what you have to them. I have shimano 8spd rapidfire shifters on my hybrid ( though an older/different model ) and the downshift lever springs back. With rapidfire shifters you can double down shift (i.e. move two gears down) by pressing the lever the full distance, which may be why your feeling you've dropped down more than one gear.
EDIT: I got this from here too . "Gear shifting operation
Both lever (A) and lever (B) always return to the initial position when they are
released after shifting."

Is your cable slack, the one that runs to the rear dérailleur? Normally the return tension or the vast majority of it is supplied by the rear dérailleur. My immediate thought is the cable is slack having pulled though the clamp bolt on the dérailleur.

I didn't know about the double down shift, that explains why I often end up from 3 to 1.

However, sometimes it seems OK, I move it until I hear it click, and it comes back, but other times, I'd say more often than not, it doesn't. I am guessing there is little resistance which is why I am also double shifting - I assume on a working unit it's not that simple to accidentally downshift (or is it?). I am open to being told I am doing it wrong!

It's started to make a bit of a click today too from the pedals or back wheel. The bike has only done 20 miles!

I would have to look, although to be honest I wouldn't know what is right or not.

I think I'll follow the above advice and phone the shop and take it back. Problem is I am not sure I am up to a 11 mile round trip ride yet (I know, bad isn't it )

Fair enough and 11 miles is a goodly distance.

If you do want to check it, there's lots of simple advice on youtube: This for instance is one.

Of course it might not be that but maybe worth a check if it saves you a hard 11 miles.
