Hi,

Have just bought myself a secondhand Raleigh Wayfarer bike with 26 x 1 3/8 tyres. Now, I'm disposing of my ASDA mountain bike, currently fitted with 26 x 1 1/2 slick tyres. What I wanted to know is, would the slick MTB tyres fit the Wayfarer? In other words, would I be wasting my time putting the knobblies back on the ASDA bike before flogging it, to keep the slick tyres as spares for the Raleigh?

Thanks in advance!
Steve

26 x 1 3/8 are utterly incompatible with any MTB tyres. You can't swap the two at all. Sorry.

Thanks TheDoctor for the reply. Saves me getting my hands all mucky putting the knobblies back on the ASDA bike. May keep the whole bike as a spare just in case, but for now it's onwards and upwards with the Wayfarer........... so much more fun and rideable than the budget MTB, even if it is 30 years old!

I have a worrying feeling that I had a Wayfarer in the dim and distant past. 3 speed hub gear, sit-up-and-beg sort of thing?
They're a pretty good bike.

Don't go by the 26x13/8 measurement as these can be misleading, they can vary up to an inch in diameter 26x11/4 is 661 mm whereas 26x1 is 617 mm!

On the tyre will be an ERTRO number - XXX-YY

XXX is the diameter of the wheel rim and YY the width of the tyre - this is a far more accurate measurement.

You must have been posh, mine was singlespeed  until i saved enough paper round money to fit 5 spd gears & respray it black, made it much faster

Yeah sounds like it's the one you had. 3 speed at its age is optimistic. I've managed to get 2 out of it so far, being bottom and top!. Bought it for nostalgia and I wanted a decent town bike that would be easy to ride. I remember my dad had one of these for at least 25 years, cycling 12 miles every day on it so I knew they were made to last. He only replaced it when he came in to some money and rather than have it serviced, he went for a more modern Raleigh equivalent.

I'm having immense fun on it so far, just staying in top gear for now. I think the gear lever and / or hub need looking at if I'm to get all 3 gears, but I'm not finding much need for changing down at the moment :-)

If I need new tyres I'll get some off Ebay - there's plenty to choose from that'll fit the Wayfarer on there :-)

It would be good to see some pics. Last time I saw one it was near Doncaster, an elderly guy with a rather neglecected looking example, but it brought back some happy memories
