Hi guys,

I hope everyone is doing as well as can be!

This is my first post on CC, so any advice/help integrating wouldn't go unappreciated

My first post comes bearing a request of infomation on two (one not so) lovely specimens of old school Raleighs

The Sirocco, steel and aluminium components are weathered, the paint job needs touch ups but the red paint and stickers look really well. In the photos there is a section of frame nere the The wheel bearings are stiff/creak, as do the BB ones (a little less)

The Record Sprint is in lovely condition with ver little signs of use, just few scuffs on the frame and a few sticker scuffs/lifts. The paint is still on the rim where the brake pads apply. The brakes and gears seem to work and I ha noticed the cables for the back end are internally routed in the top tube!

I believe that both bikes have all their original components (including the cracked/perished tyres)

A discussion on history & evaluation would be of great joy/help

All the best

Steady x

Very nice, particularly the Record Sprint which looks to be in excellent condition. It may be one the last models as they seemed to loose the gold anodised components as the production ran. They were brought out to emulate the style of the livery used on John Player Special F1 cars which was raced around that time. There was a Ford Capri in the same livery.

You might have a bit of a struggle removing that stem on the sirocco as it looks well rusted but maybe plenty of lubricant will eventually free it. Just be careful about how much force you use.

Welcome Steady,

Red one - new Tange Levin headset, also possibly bottom bracket, bar tape, chain, grease and autosol for cleaning up ally bits and pieces. If you have spanners and such like about £60 to get it looking beautiful and working nicely?

Small amount of money for the hours of fun to be had dismantling, cleaning and putting back together

Barnet,
Both bikes will come up nicely. Take a bit of care with the Scirocco as Cycleops says, the stem looks very corroded and will take some work to remove it. Hours of fun ahead for you.^_^

If stem is completely stuck you could try this:

  • saw through stem just below handlebars so that handlebars don't get in the way
  • pull forks out of frame (with remnants of stem still stuck in place)
  • blow torch, carefully, where the stem enters the forks (I used a Bunsen burner - pupils were very interested and chance to talk about expansion)
  • while still hot, pour cold water over the heated part
the different expansion of the aluminium and steel and the sudden contraction worked a treat for me, the stem slipped then out nicely.

Nice bikes; the Sirocco has been one of my favourite rides of the last few years, not the lightest but very lively.
