Through word of mouth,I picked this up today

its a 70s Scorpio, brand new old stock, never on the road.
It was found in the store room of a local shop. The owner closed the shop years ago but all the stock was left in the shop. He passed away 3 years ago and the family only recently cleared it out to sell the property.
Clear protective plastic still on the decals and on the saddle( I do have the pedal too)
Besides freeing up the brake cables ,a set up and a clean, all ready to roll 👍

Centrepulls would have impressed the kids back then, indicating a small step up from the bottom of the range 5 or 10 speed. A  very small one.

The front and rear mudguards have clearly been fitted by two different people - the stays inside the clamp at the front, outside at the rear. They aren't original.

1978ish. Would have been about £50 when new. Earlier ones had a different rear mech.

A small market for a teenager's market Raleigh Gas Pipe of the era, but mint or restored ones seem to shift in the £150-£200 region if you can find a misty eyed buyer thst had one as a kid. Perhaps a little more for this NoS one if its undamaged? I guess it has original tyres too but anyone would be daft to go try and ride on them.

Good morning,

What a lovely bit of nostalgia.

I had a Raleigh Shadow of that era, but that had brake lever hoods/no suicide levers, a Huret (Sachs/SRAM ) rear mech and Racing Half Guards. So I wonder if this bike was sold and the shop had replaced the pretend mudguards with somethine useful.

Are you in Norther Ireland and would that make shipping to the UK mainland horrendous, Paisley seem to be £40 and 2 day delivery?

I can imagine that at the right price it would fly out of the door to somone of my age, just so we can relive the weight, lack of gears etc and then say it's just as good as modern Dura Ace as we silently leave it in the garage and get a £500 Carrera out.

Bye

Ian

The bike was removed and built from the box a week ago ( the box I'm told was absolutely rotten) albeit the guys that built it are not bicycle enthusiasts and the mudguards were in the box with the bike.
I have seen these on Google searches with the identical mudguards so perhaps an optional extra from the era?

Love it and well saved , ride it and enjoy it

I did a little research on the history behind the bike.
The bike was found in an old dealership in Portadown, northern Ireland when the owner passed away a few years back and the family were clearing out the premises.
6 bikes were found in new condition
3 Scorpios,2 arenas and 1 chipper.

They were pretty much the only option back then for those desiring full mudguards but not wanting to pay a mint.

Definitely not original the bike and not a Raleigh accessory, but a common aftermarket item. Alas in this case poorly fitted, which is a potential hazard. I'd be inclined to remove them as they add zero to the value of the bike but as a period accessory you might be able to punt them on for a few more shekels.
