Let me gaze into my crystal ball...

Cyclists are rude, inconsiderate and ignore the highway code. They should wear helmets, pay road tax and be more accountable.

No they're not, the majority are good people, they are more often victims than perpetrators, introducing new legislation is pointless propaganda, helmets are a grey area and there's no such thing as road tax.

It's sad that people having an influential platform don't always use it to best effect... but then I suppose they wouldn't be popular then and so less influential. Chicken and egg perhaps.

These opinion piece type of shows or columns are invariably about attracting feedback or generating interest and debate (so they say). It's a numbers game and the cynic in me expects that's linked to advertising revenues.

Don't expect balance. Expect a token lamb to the slaughter of baying masses, purportedly in the name of balance and fairness.

But then I'm lazy. I turn a deaf ear/blind eye and ignore the righteous indignation of people who claim the right because they pay their taxes/road tax/etc.

And I wonder which side of the 'argument' will be given more time. The one based on ignorance and stereotypes or the one based on facts?

Personally I have no quibble being held responsible for my actions.

If you ride fast on a pavement and knock over a pedestrian killing them, you should be punished, and a small fine is not punishment!

Roger Geffen made a good point that its ALL vulnerable road users who are at risk and that should be the thrust of the argument.

At the end of the day if we all behaved in a decent manner, no matter our mode of transport, there would be far less of an issue.

how many riders report dangers, illegal, offensive and criminal behaviour ? not a masive number i bet. now how mainy riders are subjected to dangers, illegal, offensive and criminal behaviour ? and why do they not report it? the response you will receive from police will very dependent on where you live, and what the current high priority target they are chasing. all i can go on is personal experience, a total utter waste of time!
if i was to ride on the pavement and kill some one,(I do not and never have ridden on the pavement) treat it the same as a car driver how dose some thing similar ie a few hundred quid fine and a years suspended sentence.
do a google and you will find dozens of ones like this.

Does anyone with any legal knowledge know why we can't scrap the "Causing Death by..." charges and just prosecute for manslaughter instead?

It was funny, the usual assortment of bike haters phoned in. Best of the day was some bint who complained about cyclists wearing iPods because when everyone is driving silent Hydrogen and electric cars the cyclists won't hear them coming.

I love the idea of someone getting so irate they phone in to complain about a hypothetical problem in an unspecified future.

Perhaps we need a law against reading a paper whilst flying your jetpack, just in case someone invents a viable jetpack.
