I'm looking for a bag to go on top of my rear pannier, and being a tight fisted northerner, don't want to spend too much on something that'll be used on short pleasure jaunts (not touring).

Noticed this on Ebay...

...which looks like it'll hold what I want (bit of food, spectacles, spare tube, compact camera, phone and waterproofs), and it's cheap! The various pockets look quite handy for the camera, tube, specs, etc. But it doesn't look very waterproof (a shower cap type cover might sort that out)... plus the shoulder strap & handle will be useful when off the bike. A bit of elastic webbing on top would be handy though.

It's the usual, recommend a rack pack type thread.

That one is certainly cheap enough. It gets good reviews here..

It's not waterproof but just put eveything in plastic bags first & hey presto!

Unless your rack is a Topeak and can take advantage of their proprietary mounting system I'd say the Roswheel is as good as any, particularly at that price.

Aye... it does look a bit too cheap, but then again, it might not get much use as I'm looking for an intermediary bag between my saddle bag and panniers.

This one looks OK but I'm not looking to buy a new rack as well, but then again...

...£55 for the rack and bag isn't bad at all.

If you're thinking of going down that route you'll have to take a look at the Topeak range. Maybe a wee bit more expensive but excellent kit.

yeah i like the toppeak stuff, but is a bit pricey... i think it was the design their racks that put me off (big feet means i need to mount my panniers as far back as possible), but will have another look.

for £30 this looks OK...

...but i wouldn't trust those zips without a rain cover.

I'm not a fan of saddle bags. I don't like anything that can move about. I just bought a Topeak rack last week and think it's brilliant. What's even more brilliant is the basket I bought to go with it. Baskets aren't cool I suppose but it's great to be able to just throw anything I like in it, not needing to worry about closing zips or anything. Really quite liberating.

What size are your feet? I'm a 46 and I have loads of clearance.

Edit - Sorry, I missed your reference to panniers. Yes, I can see they might be a problem.

TBH I'd love to put a wicker basket on the front for the reasons you describe... just bung stuff in with zero faff ...plus, a wicker basket on an MTB would be so wrong, it'd be right! :okay:

It's strange, but since I moved to France I care far less about my bike image. I think it's because bikes are far more common here than back in Scotland. You see all sorts of people riding all sorts of bikes here and nobody bats an eye. It's a good feeling.

I still wouldn't have a wicker basket though. I'm a man. Black wire mesh for me. The Topeak baskets are quick release and have a handle built-in so I just take it into the supermarket & fill it up. That way I never buy more than I can carry.
