A good lock and insurance

Lock to hopefully deter theives and save you hassle of insurance claims.

Insurance for if they actually get your bike because apparently with most locks with a built in theft insurance, if the lock goes missing as well as the bike you dont get anything. Theives will probly take the lock rather than leave evidence rendering this built in insurance near useless against anyone bar the most idiotic of theives. Insurance will cover you for crashes and 3rd party too if you choose the right policy.

Where are you going to keep it? will you be locking it up in the street at all?

I keep my better bikes indoors, luckily I have good secure parking at work too. I almost never need to leave a good bike in the street (except outside a cafe in the middle of nowhere)

More than one lock if you leave it in an outbuilding or garage, lock the bike to something difficult to move.

I keep my best bike(s) in the house, if you have to keep it in a garage then look at floor bolts that are set in (or screwed into) concrete. Motorcycle accessory places have them. For the chain and padlock, look at what insurance organisations recommend.

I keep my best bike in the bedroom, its the first thing I see in the morning and the last on a night, I could keep it downstairs inside in my shed built onto side of the house but too frightened the other half scratches it going into the deep freezes etc like she has done already. I may move it down one day to see how it goes again, but I am planning on covering the frame with pipe lagging if it will fit or just bubble wrap.

Out on the road if I am alone, I never get off it.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Mine are kept in a locked shed behind locked tall gates, mind you both of them are worth maybe 5-10 % of most peoples pride and joy

If i tried to keep it in the house i would get the toddler mucking about with it , heck the other half hit the roof when i was changing the brake pads in the kitchen ( it was sub zero outside mind )

As others have said, decent locks and be smart when and where you're using them.

Check your house insurance to see if the bike is covered and to what level, you might need to sort out something extra with them or someone else to get the cover you are happy with.

Does this mean you have a not so decent bike? If so, keep the good one locked up either inside on in a garage (if one is available) and when you're out somewhere you'd have to lock the bike up, take the old one.
