My bike has a quick release saddle, and was wondering if I had my bike locked up, should I take the saddle with me in case someone steals it?

Or do people generally not steal saddles?

Yes (you should take it with you).

No (people who steal things do not generally not steal saddles, i.e. they do steal them).

I wouldn't generally leave my bike unattended in a city, even locked up. If lowlife can't nick it, they are just as likely to jump on it out of spite. I feel better about it at country cafes but even then bikes do get stolen from time to time.

PS By the same reasoning - make sure you lock your wheels up too!

Folk will nick anthing that aint tied down and even if it is they'll try. I suppose it depends where you're leaving it and how long etc. You might consider replacing it with a normal pin (or security skewer), a small cable through the saddle if you don't want to remove it all the time or a peice of insulation tape or something to mark the exact height if you are. Slighty OT a mate of mine removed his seat post to come back later and find somebody had nicked the clamp.

I've had 2 saddles disappear from my bike in London. One wasn't a QR - they just undid it at the post mount. The other was outside my local swimming pool. Must have disturbed them as they'd got as far as undoing the bolts on the shifters to strip the gears etc. Mid afternoon, under CCTV cover, on a Deore city runner MTB.

Whatever it is, it will go...

Some people will nick anything. A bike computer springs to mind.
Just the computer - not any of the bits that make it work. ;)
Thank you so very much, and may the fleas of a thousand camels invade your undies.

Speaking of which, I cycled around Smithfield this afternoon. Locked to a lamp-post - just one D lock, no wheels off or owt, was a really nice, if fashion victim, green SS/Fixie.

With a Brooks honey saddle and matching leather bar-tape, all looking very new.

That was about mid-day. It's now 1730. I wonder how much of it's still there?

currently down in Oxford on a mini break,bike-tastic here most of them left against railings/walls with just a cable lock thru the back wheel and frame not actually locked to anything solid.I'd be a nervous wreck if I did that.

Yes, take it with you.

On my shitty bike, that i leave locked up, i have a bit of old bike chain, wrapped in an old inner tube, which joins the seat to the frame.
Will stop the person just walking past taking my seat.
Id like to see them get the seat pin out! It was stuck in the frame, only freed it last night. Clamped it in a vice, and put alot of force in twisting.
It would turn, but wouldnt come come!
I wanted it to go further in, so i used a hammer and just wacked it in!:tongue:
