Fame and fortune and everything that goes with it.

Nothing. Zilch. Zero. De nada.

If you win the TdF then there is a winners prize money but I'm not sure what that is, in addition the winner has probably won or been near the font of some stage finishes and that also gets some prize money. However nobody can win either stages or the GC without the help of his team riders and so some of the money is shared with them. In addition the winner of the TdF is also invited to attend other races and for this he gets appearance money which I believe is fairly lucrative. There will also be sponsorship money and money for endorsing various bikes, equipment parts and clothing brands. All in all I think its fair to say they are happy to get the win for the money as well as the fame. However to answer the question of how much they get...........I haven't a clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, Dave's reply is wrong.

No it isn't.

I've never won the last time trial I did but the bloke who did win it didn't win a prize.

But the bloke who won the TdF got, as I said, fame and fortune and everything the goes with it.

I thank you all.

Surely, Dave it's not about winning prizes all the time, is it?

...and if bonj had said it? ;)

Sam, ask your colleagues at the club (Thanet wasn't it?) I'm sure they'll be able to help you. Cycling clubs really are a good place to learn, especially if you have the talent and desire. Joining is simply a matter of turning up.

Traditionally the winner of a grand tour shares his winnings around the team because of the later benefits as already mentioned. Armstrong also footed the bill for a couple of nights in a 5* hotel on the corner of Place de la Concorde after the wins.

In time trialling it depends on the event. You probably won't get anything at an evening 10. Open events vary but for instance last week the prize fund for the top 5 teams was something like £800. Today, the money was less and a lot more alcohol was up for grabs (they seem to think that students all drink!).
