question of valve size

This is prob a silly question but what is the difference with valve sizes... My tube size is 700x23c and the valve length I have just bought is 32mm...however there is a longer valve....so when do you use the longer valve? does it depend on the type of wheel? I have used the longer valve as which makes it even more confusing...sorry if this is a stupid question...but it would be nice to know

The longer ones are for deep rimmed wheels like these
