I have a mountain bike which i love, but the front sprocket is very low geared. How easy is it to change /upgrade this to a larger one? Are they all a standard size?? (there are lots on ebay but no spec sizes)

Also the front Derailleur seems to have some sort of bracket attatched to the front sprocket that holds it on??

Any advice would be great TA

Are they all a standard size?? No!

You need to figure out your Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) if you are just changing chainrings. But you also need to check wether your derailleur mech is capable of handling larger chainrings.

You need to make sure that your chainset can swap out chainrings. In my limited experience of MTBs (the cheap end), some chainrings appear to be rivetted so it is impossible to change them.
Each arm of the crank should have a bolt running through it and the chainrings. If not, you may have to get some newer cranks if you want a different combination up front.

weely there are hundreds of different chainsets by dozens of different manufacturers all different in one respect or other.
It would be helpful to tell us the make at least and the current set up ? double triple etc and number of chainring teeth . A picture tells a thousand words

Your best bet for spare rings is somewhere like St Johns Cycles www.sjscycles.co.uk they have an extensive range and are an online order company

If you hit problems with making the front end bigger then you may be able to make the back end smaller to get the same result.
Count the teeth on your smallest back cog and see if there are replacements with fewer teeth.
Not an expert but if you go from say 12 teeth to 11 that is a fair difference equal to about five more teeth on a big ring on the front. Should go on without too much problem or re setting of gear change.
