Hey all

I'm new to cycling. I just purchased my first road about 6 weeks ago. I ride about 70 to 90 miles a week. I know I'm building muscles in my legs that I never used before. I would like to know if the pain is a good pain or am I riding too much for a beginner. Should I continue to ride or ease up and relax for a few days? Does everyone stretch before and after riding

Is the seat height correct? Stretching all of the muscles in your legs is definitely helpful, also a foam roller, as is taking rest days

Pain is rarely a good thing, but it might have a clear cause

What type of terrain are you riding?

I was measured when I purchased the bike. I also went on line to check on saddle heights and did the 6 o'clock trick. The roads I ride are mixed. Hills flat etc...thanks for the reply

Don't ride with painful muscles.

Let them recover, then go and ride again. 6 weeks is nothing, take your time, your body and muscles will adapt to the work you're asking it to do over time.

People's bodies generally know what they are doing. Keep riding, but listen to what your muscles are telling you.

Try doing plenty of stretching too.
I do it as much as possible. It feels good when I stretch

Thanks

I will listen to my body. I'll take a few days off and relax and stretch few times a day

Is it soreness or acute pain?

If it is sore that is to be expected given you are pushing hard in comparison to your current capabilities (maybe take something like Ibuprofen and do some walking to help promote blood flow to the muscles / deal with inflammation which will help you recover quicker.)

If the pain is acute then you will need to be careful in case it is a sprain / strain and keep a close eye on how your symptoms are developing.

It feels sore and tender, however if I stretch it , it feels good and then it tightens up. I think I was pushing myself too hard. I wanted to jump into it quickly instead of gradually doing it. I will take some ibuprofen thanks much

You need to stretch hamstrings and quads (which is more difficult), If you are talking about muscular ache rather than pain this is normal but tight leg muscles can lead to knee problems. I suggest that you go slow when you first set out so as to warm up and do static stretching when you get back while still warm.

Quads hurt I think it's just aches. My hamstrings don't bother me. Thanks for reply

It's only muscle pain - not gonna kill yer. Ignore all the advice about resting up until the muscles recover. Just keep cycling and eventually that muscle ache will disappear as your legs adapt and become 'stronger.' :okay:

Edit: ignore this advice if you think the pain is caused by a muscle pull or slight tear; in all other circumstances plough on regardless! ^_^

I agree, if I didn't go out for a ride every time I felt I had a niggle I'd not be riding half as much as I do!
