Q/R Skewer - Springs ?

Are the little conical springs that are usually on Q/R skewer an essential component?

If so - does anyone know anywhere that sells just the springs?

I've a skewer with no springs, and don't really want to buy a whole new skewer if i can help it.

Don't need them - they just spread the ends to make them easier to get on/off.

They are not 'mission critical'.

They just hold the skewer central in the axle to make putting the wheel in easier. Most bike sops will have scrap hubs and will let you have a spring.
