Trying to do up an old Peugeot Ladies bike for a friend of my wifes. The rear steel rimmed wheel with a solid axle, is shot but I have a nice ali rimmed wheel with a Q/R hub. The Q/R will not hold the wheel in the dropouts under load despite trying a new skewer etc. Can Q/R hubs generally be converted to a solid axle?
Cheers,

Yes, they can. But, have you tried a Shimano steel skewer? They're grippier than the lighter alloy ones IME.

the question is why not.

how much of the axel is sticking out each side?

how wide are the drop-outs?

if it is an older and cheaper frame then the drop-outs might be stamped out of a thin sheet of metal.
if the amount of axel sticking out on each side is greater than the drop-out width then it will never hold
unless you file some of the axel away.
or you could use a spacer on the axel

Thanks to TheDoctor & Grasen for helpful replies. Just finished using solid axle from buckled wheel and bearings from Q/R wheel. After a bit of packing between dropouts, working fine.
