Can anybody recommend a puncture resistant tyre for a road/racing bike that is used mostly on cycle tracks at the moment but will be used on the roads when I feel more confident.

Agreed, mine have been bombproof, though your road bike may not have enough clearance to fit them.

I used to use Specialized Armadillos on my road commuter bike, they were also very reliable.

My Schwalbe Blizzards have been puncture proof for 6 years - until Friday. Then I made the classic mistake of swapping the tube and not checking the tyre properly and had another puncture after a mile. Got rescued by the wife in the car and the nextday found a tiny but very sharp nail sticking out on the inside of the tyre. Two tubes to repair .

Conti-Gatorskin hardshells - THE END!
Not really , i run these and i still get the occasional flat as i have to negotiate a glass strewn section .
Even at the recommended pressure the side walls are still weak and you have to keep checking the tyres for embedded shards.
For bombproof tyres as others have said look at the marathon plus or for a bit racier tyre the durano plus. The best way to avoid flats of course is to get a hover bike

From others reviews the Marathon + are the ultimate in p'ture protection but are a tad heavy.
I've had Gator skins great fast tyres and p'ture free for me and despite reports of skittishness in the wet they were never with me (maybe too high psi's have a lot to do with it).
A mate from a lbs who's really quick swears by Bontager Hardcase's but maybe he's just trying to plug what he sells ;)
My own current choice at the moment is Mitch Kylions and they've not p'tured on me yet but I'm not a heavy rider.

how about if you have an old Raleigh with 27 x 1 1/4 inch ? I've just got a Wisp and I was wondering what to put on (it has old Raleigh tyres of unknown vintage) I've got some sort of Schwalbe heavy duty winter tyre on my back wheel of my Panache but I was wondering about something a little less mountainous.. I know that it's an old tyre size but otherwise I'm clueless

I put on my Marathon XR for the winter and despite an abundance of glass in places they have held up really well.
My only complaint is that they grip so we that they throw far up too much mud onto the bike.

I'm not hurrying anywhere so I am of the thought 'if it ain't broke don't fix it'.
After too many stop start injuries I finally abandoned walking 10 months ago and things are at last looking fairly positive for plenty of adventurous 'good for the soul' no puncture cycling this year.

I've got Marathons (without the +) on my commuter. They don't add too much weight to say a Conti GP 4 Seasons and the rolling resistance on them is fine.

Only problem with marathons is clearnace for me as i can only just get 23`s under the cruds and i believe they are 25s minimum, otherwise i wouldhave them on the commuter as weight is not a problem compared to amount i have strapped to the frame.

Yeah they are 25s minimum. I'm fortunate that although my commuter is decked out in 105 for some reason the calipers aren't 105 and are just labelled Shimano with enough space to fit a 25.
