So, I bought a folding bike on gumtree, its a bit of a state but does the job..

I managed to pop one tire after about 15 minutes riding as I went up kerb too hard

So I though tires are bald, popped one tube, I'll replace tubes and tires, based on my childhood experiences with puncture repair its easy.

It wasn't quite as easy as I'd hoped but hey hi, got new tires and tubes in, all good \o/

Now my problem is, trying to pump them up, my hand pump gets impossible to pump any further, and they feel quite hard but by the time I've got the attachment off the thread, a bit of air has come out and they feel ok. Then I sit on the bike and both look like they are almost flat!! What have I done wrong?

Thanks

What pressure do the tyres need to get to? It should say on the side wall.

Could just be a naff pump. No air should escape when removing it to be honest. Could try a track pump for when you're at home - much easier to get more pressure.

A car foot pump will be fine if it has car type valves, otherwise a track pump will get them to pressure, which is written min-max on the side of the tyre. Bald is good for on road use, some tyres start their life bald so if they are what's on don't worry, you need to be doing well over 100mph for them to aquaplane!

The general market for hand pumps, for all intents and purposes are designed for quick inflation, on the side of the road after puncture repair. They just dont exert enough pressure to be able to pump your tyre up to the recommended pressure. (CO2 / some more expensive hand pumps exempt)

Get yourself a Track Pump for home, something like a Joe Blow. You wont look back and this should a) prevent pinch punctures from poorly inflated tyres and b) improve your rolling resistance with a correctly inflated tyre.

Damn, waste of money then! I'll get that one...

A lezyne mini pump is all you require whilst out riding. Fits both valve types. Not cheap but worth it.
At home - Joe blow 2 - it laughs at 120 psi

Quite true. ^ Borrow my neighbors' now and again. I have the Blackburn Air tower, and it is pretty good as well. But it is not as good as the Joe Blow 2, especially at high pressures.
