Blackburn jobby on Amazon - very light, tiny and powerful too. Nice fittings for attaching to bottle cage holder (even if you have a bottle on).

I would recommend crank brothers pumps with gauges or something like the road morph. I had a completely cheapo pump that didn't work at all. I bought a blackburn pump for about the price range you're talking about it and yes, it actually pumps the tyres up and locks on properly. I thought this was quite good at the time until I got a major puncture and realised that sadly it too is practically useless. You have a puncture and break down 5-10 miles from home, you can get up to 20psi and slug home faster than you can walk (just). I got a crank brothers pump with a gauge on it and had to fix one punctures miles out in the middle of nowhere in the Peak district completely on my own. A piece of cake in comparison. Also helped change tubes for someone else on the road once and the turnaround time was very, very quick - this from someone who is inept at changing tubes. I think gauges are very useful as it's hard to tell the difference between about 20psi, 40psi and certainly anything above that. Some people manage. If you have Popeye arms and can gauge pressures by feel accurately you'll be fine with a blackburn pump.

I agree to a point. I'm far, far from Popeye but can pump my road bike's tyres up to a good solid pressure with merely reasonable effort. Generally speaking, older pumps are sooooo inefficient in comparison to modern quality ones.

Most of us can judge a firm tyre by pressing it with your thumb - I know that's not accurate but that'll be fine for getting to work or home.

which is also a topeak product any good?

I have no idea. It is not particularly branding that makes the road morph special, it is in effect that it is a 'mini' track pump. This is good for two reasons, the amount of oomph you can give it due to standing it on the floor and lack of problems the pump wiggling around on traditional pumps.

700x23c, ish. The larger volume tyres it is incredibly difficult. Once you're on about 700x35c it's a complete nightmare.

Supposedly. I've found that even incredibly experienced people who really know what they are doing can get it 'wrong'. Not that their help isn't unappreciated, just saying. Fine for 5-10 miles.

Right, had a look at crank brothers and the road morph, which is a topeak product, so is this >

I had one of those on the MTB. Note the past tense. They don't like mud and water and it failed to perform after only a handful of uses.

Luckily, when it did fail, the chap that I was riding with had a Topeak Road Morph, so I now have a Topeak Turbo Morph on the MTB. It's good enough that I frequently use it when I'm at home, rather than the track pump.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
For road tyres i avoid the pumps without a hose as i have snapped a couple of valaves inthe past trying to get up to pressure.

I have just bought one of these ..

As i found on the club run my pump of choice for commuting( stashed in the pannier ) was to big to lump around.

This is my commuting pump , excellent as it is a mini track pump with a foot peg , pressure valve and gets the tyre up to over 100 psi very quickly
