My pump adaptor has suddenly started to unscrew presta valve cores and I'm wondering why it's now doing this.?
I've had the adaptor a number of years and it never did this until recently. Of course it coincides with the P fairy finding 2 of my rear tyre in the last week.

Is there anything I can do other than replace it ?

The screw down bit of the valve has probably got bent and is catching the threads on the hose as you unscrew. Carefully straighten it with a pair of pliers.

That may have be the case on the first one as the top was bent slightly. But yesterday I was fitting a brand new tube with the screwy bit being dead straight ( just checked it)

Some tubes come with loose cores that have to be tightened before use, continental tubes ?

Yes they both were, I bought a job lot a while ago.

Next , what's the best way to tighten presta valves ?

I bought a job lot of continental tubes a while ago as well and the cores would not tighten, was loads of reviews on wiggle about the faulty tubes.

This was exactly the problem that the cyclist I stopped alongside recently was having - after all the struggling to replace the tube and refit the tyre, when she'd got it up to pressure and tried to remove the pump the core came with it and the air left the tube in an instant.

And the device smutchin links to is exactly the solution that the next rider to stop was carrying in his saddlebag. Happy days.

I noticed yesterday that the valve core on the front wheel of my new bike is slightly bent, so I'll look out for this. Thanks all.

They're very handy, and very easy to use. They usually come supplied with tubeless valves so you can remove the core to add sealant, but at a quid a piece from Wiggle, it's worth adding one to your next order.

Never occurred to me to carry one in my on-the-bike kit as I've never had the problem of cores unscrewing on the road - perhaps because I use a pump with a press-on head and/or because I don't use Conti tubes. I will add one, though - they're so light and small as to be well worth having just in case.
