Over the last few rides I had noticed that the front mudguard was flapping around a bit at the front.

A bit of investigation this evening (taking the thing off) revealed that the bracket used to secure it to the fork crown had come off. This is secured by a couple of rivets through the plastic. The plastic at this point had failed. Now these mudguards have been with the bike since new and are are about 4 years old, so not complaining about the life. However I want to ride with them on.

I couldn't see any obvious way of securing the bracket again with a solid fastner without drilling out the old rivets and putting a small bolt & nut through. A scan around the available tools was getting depressing, until I spied a tube of No more Nails.

A squirt later and the bracket was back in position, use of a strap holding it in place. After a couple of hours on the radiator curing, it is now back on the bike feeling solid again.

So, the question is ... how long before the glue fails and it starts flapping again

With the state of our roads I doubt it'll last long. The mudguards on my ridgeback velocity were held together and continuously rebodged every so often with multiple zip ties until I invested in a new pair.

depends, did any squeeze they the holes in the guard itself? if so, i reckon, quite a while, if not and you're just relying on the bracket holding to smooth plastic, first pothole.

This is common with mudguards, the old rivets will normally push through with a bradawl or small phillips screwdriver, I've had to do repairs to mudguards after this has happened several times. Push the rivets through and secure with small screws and washers..

It will last indefinately...whilst it's dry.
The first time it chucks it down and you need mudguards will be the precise moment it fails.

And the answer is ...

... one day.

It was a bit loose after the ride to work, but was completely off by the time I got back.

Now fixed as dave r suggests.

No nails glue is pretty crap, their double sided tape impressed me though, held a mini camera to the underneath of my front splitter for a couple of weeks driving in the alps.
