Projects for 2016

Most years I set a theme to ride or in the past walk too. This year I will re-visit one of my walking projects but with a twist for a road cyclist. I will cross every road bridge that is a legal to a cyclist from the source to the mouth of both the Cumbrian Eden and the Northumbrian Tyne (North & South). On the Tyne, I will include the North Shields ferry and the Tyne tunnel (if it is open). I think the North Tyne will be the biggest challenge as I am not sure where the last bridge on it is and there maybe transport problems. On the Eden, I will get the train to Garsdale Head and regard that as the start. Anybody else got any ideas for the year?

I was writing mine a few minutes ago...

Maybe not as specific as yours but in general what I want to do this year:

- Move to Malaga, Spain.... Done with Belfast.
- Start my own business of cyclo-tourism. Maybe add a B&B to it or the other way around.
- Ride 15.000 km (maybe more) this year.
- Climb 150.000 meters for the year.
- Find a job that allows me to do all this.
- BE HAPPY....!!!

Stupid as it may seem, I hope to use 2016 to plan two tours in 2-3 years: 2-3 months cycling from Broome to Esperance in Western Australia, approx. 3,500 km

and 2-3 months from Seattle to San Diego, approx. 2,600 km.

Budget, logistics and the missus' blessing needs to be sorted, but I like to have plenty of time preparing things, not least buying another (and proper touring) bike.

Thanks for that link.

I thought about this ride a few years ago, but with a left turn before the Mexican border heading east and finally to Florida/Key West, but it was too logistically challenging at the time. I did buy the maps and some books for the relevant sections.

I've provisionally google-mapped it following a route as close to the Pacific coast as possible. I'll give your link a more thorough examination.

Looks a great route but a little ambitious for me. I did like the look of the step through frame bike in the advert and I am wondering if they do a similar one in the UK. An integral rack and hub gears appeal to me appeals to me.
I know, they have some really fine bikes on that site. (used to be Bikecentennial) .I didn't even know Soma still made bikes. Frame price on some is quite inexpensive. I think Planet X and Rivendell are both on the West Coast. Rivendell has a step-through called "The Clementine". Rivendell is owned by Grant Petersen, who used to design for Bridgestone, when they were in the States. He's a lightning rod for Fredly controversy, and a true apostle of the practical in cycling. Soma makes a frame called" Buena Vista", and the" New Albion Starling" as well

I'd love to quit work and cycle coast to coast in the States - and one day I will. However, this year is likely to be more low key. Would like to do a tour of Norway/Sweden/Denmark but might struggle this year. Worst scenario would be just getting on the bike and doing a 5-7 day tour to see some more of this Country.

How much of this country have you really seen? Though it's nice to be able to travel abroad, there are still many miles and places in wonderful Britain that I haven't seen (and yes and one or two I should not have seen). It is surprising that even after forty years of wandering in my own back yard I still find new things to marvel at. Oh yes, I did travel abroad when I was younger at the expense of HMG.

I saw some during a LEJOG a couple of years ago and so appreciate there's lots to see still. I'd like to see as much of the World as.possible and Cycling is such a great way to see things that you'd otherwise miss in a car. It's just unfortunate that finances, family and work prohibit the free movement that I've come to love in my mid 30's!
