Problem shifting up (only to 6th gear)?

Hi guys,

I have salvaged a hardly used/unloved Hybrid Marin Bobcat bike from my parents garage. The bike is in good nick, though it has been stood for a fair few years (5-7 years is my best guess (any idea on how best to identify the model/year???). I doubt it saw more than 50-100 miles before it was stored in their garage all that time. Wear doesn't appear to be an issue here. I did my best to service it before taking it out, cleaning the chain and applying new lube, replaced the inner tubes and then put on some city jet slicks for my commute.

I've had it out on a few runs now and I have noticed that there are some problems when shifting up from 5th gear on the rear sprocket. The issue seems most prominent when the front sprocket is in 3rd. The chain either refuses to budge from 5th to 6th, or takes a good 10-15 seconds to shift, yet the chain will successfully shift to 7th (and 8th) when prompted accordingly. moving from 5th to 7th in quick succession. Interestingly, moving up from 1st to 5th is flawless, and down from 8th to 1st appears to also work fine.

As far as I can tell there is no damage to the sprockets/chain/derailluer and the bike hasn't been dropped. I have read a fair few posts, as well as watched a heap of youtube videos but none seem to address this issue specifically. I have tried cleaning the derailluer with solvent and an old toothbrush to no avail. :banghead:

Any ideas?

Hi,

Best guess is some sort of kink in the cable, but just a guess.
Perhaps related to the cables long term stored postion.

Something is sticking - either the derailleur mechanism, the shifter or the cable.
As both others suggest, start with the cable (just replace it).

I'd also check the cassette/freewheel and particularly the chain, and replace if in doubt.

I can see the derailluer moves, but just not quite enough when moving up from 5th to 6th.

The cassette/freewheel and chain are all pretty much spotless due to it being barely used, I guess I'll start with the cable, presumably I just need to replace the inner cable and not the outer sheath?. I found a replacement inner and outer cable on amazon for 4 quid, will give it a go.

Is the shifter really likely to be an issue?

Clean the derailleur with penetrating fluid and re-oil it . undo the clamp on the cable so you can run it through by hand and apply some oil/lube the the cable . Also do the same to the shifters . This happened to my mtb often as for a while it lived out side . Worked a treat for me
