Has any one else heard that most of the bike brands are putting there prices up in the new year? some bike shops are saying it is going to be from 10% upto 20% on top of the hike that happened around September. Just because of the price of the pound.

Well that's great news!!
I'm not replacing my bike - so I've just saved 10-20% - fantastic!

They're making a big mistake then. No-one's got any money so no bikes will be bought. You can only charge what people are prepared to pay.

I just found this

Increasing Currency Pressures & Bicycle Pricing

As you are well aware there are high levels of volatility and uncertainty in the global financial markets currently. We believe part of our role as a responsible supplier is to manage this situation in the best way possible and to protect our customers from this volatility in a commercially sensible manner.

Since our launch of ---------, ------, and ------ ---------- dolar exchange rates have weakened considerably and we are afraid we have been finally forced to increase our pricing on ---------, ------- and ------- with immediate effect.

We have ensured that in doing so your margins remain unaffected and these brands will continue to deliver the margins that have made them so popular with you and you our customers.

Bicycles and frames ordered before today that are delivered to you before 01/11/08 will be honoured at the pricing in place at the time of order with any opening order discounts that were appropriate. Bicycles ordered before today that are delivered after 01/11/08 will be invoiced at the new pricing in place from 09/10/08 but will continue to invite the original opening order discounts.

I got some spam from Ribble last week with a heading along the lines of "BYYOURBIKENOWBEFOREWEAREPOORERTHANZIMBABWE" or somesuch. The email looked like it was selling Viagra, so went in the bin pronto.

Hard to miss the parallel between the bike shops' message to customers ('Buy NOW!') and the distributors' message to their customers - the shops - ('Buy NOW!'). Anyone would think they were both businesses desperate for ready cash...

As PaulB says, exchange rates notwithstanding, there's bugger all point raising prices beyond what people are willing and able to pay. I would be amazed to see prices rise at all in the new year. On the contrary, I anticipate loads of 'Unrepeatable offers!' (aka Buy NOW!)

I bow to the superior punster!
That's inflation for ya!

This round of price increases has been on the cards for over twelve months. The price of steel and other raw materials is the main cause, not the global economic meltdown.
