I am not used to presta valves and today I had to fix a puncture with a presta valve. I knew I had to unscrew the top part to allow for inflation. The valve did not seem to be very long and every time I inflated the tyre when removing my Pump the valve came out with the pump. This happened about 20 times till I eventually got lucky.Does anyone know why this would happen?

I am not sure how you managed that unless you have valve extensions on, you only need to loosen the knurled nut a few threads and give it a slight press to break the seal.

Annoying thing I've noticed with recent tubes with removable cores is that the valve is barely more than finger tight in tube (I assume this has something to do with deeper section wheels becoming cheaper & cheaper so valve core extension tubes are being used much more. Anyway buy your self a valve wrench (they cost £1.99 from my LBS) & nip the valves tight every time you pull the tube out of its box.

The only issue I've had recently is valve cores supplied 'lose' from the factory.

I've come across this as well, the valve core hasn't been tightened correctly in the factory and when you try to unscrew the knurled nut the entire valve comes out, in the past I've just screwed it back in and tightened it down with pliers. It sounds like this could have been the OP's problem.

I've had this recently with Continental tubes

I seem to remember a thread on here some time ago about a batch of faulty tubes, presta valves loose, I have an idea they were Continental tubes.
