"Young and Ex-whippet"
My birthday is in January but my parents have already been asking me what I want to do for it.

We will probably just go to an italian somewhere for food but I was thinking about the activity. I would like to go on a weekend holiday somewhere and go out on my bike but I dont know where would be nice at the new year? :S

Any ideas? (obviously not abroad).

KFC Prestayn? (If there is one)? Then you can ride there and ride back with the food hung from your handlebars

I think you missed the word "Italian"?

But if I was a large as most people in this country then that would be a must have (I would do it every day as the norm).

Yes, sorry... if they're up for taking you away, well, that depends on budget, I guess. But take your bike if you can, and get out for birthday ride. Any of your family into cycling?

For my sixth birthday I was taken by my sister and her husband on a narrow boat on the Basingstoke Canal just for the day, it was the best birthday I had ever had.

For my birthday, my once helped my friend's dad manouevre his longboat up the Regent's canal... I'm still smarting from the experience

Steam train with a meal on board. If they are running in January that is. Did it almost a decade ago on my 50th, thoroughly enjoyed it, even breaking down half way, was a real hoot. (No pun intended.)

You'll be 18 then wont you Matthew? I suggest you send your parents on the weekend away and you have a house party, be sure to advertise it on Facebook to maximise your chances of interesting guests

Unfortunately not (well not as much as I am). That is one downside to being this active on a bike, your family will support you, but wont do it themselves.

If you'd like your family to ride with you, choose a nice flat area, or somewhere like a country park that has off road trails (but good surfaced ones, not just rough gravel).

If you want to go off and test yourself, and come back to them in the evening, choose accommodation that is really cosy and relaxed to come back to.

It's a gamble on the weather really. Even in January, you can be lucky. Or not. Probably best to go for a place that has plenty to do indoors (big city?), if the weather is awful, but nice countryside nearby if it's good....
