I have never been the greatest advocate of Halfrauds Halfords but I must say that I am very pleased with their own brand 6 function wirefree Cycle Computer. It only has basic functions such as speed, distance (an Odometer), Time and Max Speed but it is suprisingly accurate. I have cycled a few routes which I had previously measured via Google Earth and the variance has been within 0.2 of a mile over a 10 mile route. Time will tell obn build quality, but it is certainly standing up to the cold and wet.

Well if it works that's good (no, I've been through a few!). I've got the old speedometer working again recently and it does make you feel a lot better, for example the first 50 miles of my ride on sunday were a fair improvement on the distance v a few months back but I slowed down the last 20 miles and wouldn't have known without the speedometer if I'd just calculated raw average speed at the end from google earth or something else.

I've also got a basic (wired) cycle computer from Halfords and am very happy with it and it is good value for money. I think the problems with Halfords isn't so much their stock but their staff. I had a "no, no, I don't want a cassette, I need a threaded freewheel" "but the freewheel's part of the hub and doesn't come off" type conversation with one of Halford's "trained" techs a few months back.

Halfords staff...

SOME of their staff in SOME of their branches are OK...
There are, sadly, some less than competent people not only in Halfords, but in a number of LBS round here.

Some of the Halfords products are OK too, but most of the ones I've looked at are overpriced.

The best one I had was when I went in and asked if they had a child-sized chainset.

H: Nah mate we don't sell trainsets.

D: No, I need a chainset. For a child's bike.

H: nah, I told you, we don't sell trainsets. Try ToysRUs.

D: No a chainset. Look I'll show you. (points to appropriate part on bike).

H: Nah mate, that's not a trainset. That's cranks, innit.

I left.

I have a wired one on my hybrid & it's prob my fave out of my computers. It has daily mileage, so no need to reset every day xx(
Works fine after 18 months, out in all weathers

All cycle computers are potentially accurate if you can measure your tyre circumference and program it in properly. The only ones that aren't are those that have fixed settings for wheel size.

I paid the princely sum of £6 for mine at Wilkinsons. It was worth every penny. It stopped working after the first 75 miles, and they kindly replaced it for me.

I have no reason whatsoever to doubt the new one's accuracy. The new one told me I was doing 28 mph uphill through Dewsbury on my 1980s Emmelle CrMo fossil. I didn't realise I was that fit until I checked the "highest speed" function. At some stage in the last month I have done a cool 99.9 mph. It must have been a blast. Unless someone borowed my bike and then put it back in the garage when I wasn't looking. I think it might have been Mrs Cube.

I popped into one of their new Bikehut stores today - just by St Pauls , and though I wasn't buying, I overheard a couple of conversations with customers and the guys there knew what they were talking about. And miles more helpful than the staff at some of the well known LBS's in Bristol , where I more usually browse. They were also selling Condor bikes - not more than a couple miles from Condor itself .
