I know carlonabike mentioned it in a 20mph thread recently, but this before/after video really shows what a difference a bit of (in the UK) radical thinking can make. (And the price tag seems extremely reasonable to me.)

My brother came off his bike there. The kerbs that are "not kerbs" are just high enough to take you off if you don't cross them at right angles, particularly when wet with 23s on.

I went to check it out just before the roundels were finished. It's pretty awesome, imo. The "courtesy crossings" are absolutely brilliant and there's so much more space in front of shops. It just felt like a much more pleasant space than most of our towns and cities do.

It used to be a nightmare but it seems so much better now. Mind you the roadworks involved were a pain in the saddle area.

You do have to be careful with the surface, but it doesn't half confuse drivers and you can be through the traffic quicker. Filtering is difficult though as the little curbs will have you off. It does, however prevent the tailbacks. You still get idiots overtaking you moments before the scheme, then slamming on and you end up on their tail.

I like it though.
