Thinking of getting the Dawes re-painted, as the original paint is looking a bit tatty.

Anyone know of a good power coating place in Gloucestershire? What sort of price would I expect to pay there for a frame and forks?

I've also heard that getting a 531 frame sand blasted is a bad idea, as it removes some of the metal, and that chemical paint stripping is better. Is this true? If so, where can I get the frame chemically stripped, and how much would that cost?

Thanks!

There are different types of "sand" blasting some using milder products and lower pressures. One of them will be suitable for your bike.

Yeah, I thought that blasting could be done with different types of sand/blasting materials, although I wasn't sure if the finer material would still be too harsh. I'd much prefer to get is blasted if possible without harming the bike, as more places are kitted up for shot blasting than chemical methods.

Although I'm not sure what to expect for the price.. I've heard anything between £20 and £70, and as most websites don't give prices for bike frames, I was hoping that a member could recommend me a good/cheap place within driving distance of Gloucestershire that they have experience with, so I don't have to manually contact 10's of businesses within the area.

Thanks for the reply!

The grit we use is very fine, but there are different grades of it. There was a company on the Innsworth trade park right at the back who did blasting, but I'm not sure if they are still there.
For powder coating, I can't really help as the company I used in Leckhampton years ago is long gone.

If you want it painted and lacquered, then there is a good bloke in Cirencester called Denis's motorcycle resprays who specialises in motorcycle painting.

I have heard good and bad about both paint and powder coating of someone ooop north who does both. The paint will be a nicer finish without doubt.

You could always get a tin of Nitromors and some wire wool and strip it yourself in a couple of hours (need a good set of gloves though)

Hi
I was in the powder coating business for about 10 years .Its not all its cracked up to be (although it was way back in the 1990's I used to coat bits of my motorbike in my lunch hour but I found after a couple of months the colour fades or the coating cracks. In my experience I found chemical stripper better but takes longer we used to charge around 45 quid for strip and powder coat. Not sure what it would cost now though and maybe the powder is better its basically powdered plastic

Well, just got quoted £120 from A1 Fabrications in Gloucestershire! Reviews say they do good work, but I could almost buy a new (second hand) 531 frame for that!

More phoning/emailing around is needed, me thinks.

Unfortunately the Dawes still hasn't been painted. Since I put the new wheels on my Peugeot it has transitioned towards being my main road bike, so the Dawes projects have been set on the back burner a bit. It is currently patiently waiting for the day I decide to send it off to Argos and get it done properly, stove enamelled.
