Royal Mail, tracked with signature is £5.60 for large letter up to 750g. Not sure what price you paid? Without the sig. it's £3.70. Or £3.60 signed but no tracking. Maybe you paid for heavier or added insurance or paid for am delivery?

i always use the online service and you get a good range of prices
when you are in the post offices they try and up-sell and charge you as much as possible.
i recently took in an obvious 'letter' under their categories and she still insisted in putting it through their letter checker 😕
it's a lot of money these days but they'll argue it's still good value for money

How about this.A lad i know has just left forty years. He has been off with stress, went back after sick leave.Well stress came back.He is two years from his pension but he cannot take anymore,He was an acting gaffer,so was one of the lads and manager. So he left last Saturday.good send off gifts, money a wonderful finish.this week someone from his office has rung him to ask advice and could he help sort out a problem. No came the answer.

But can you use them if they haven't got a QR code attached?

I'm not 100%, but I think old stamps with special edition like nativity scene are still legal without QR code.

I sent an item back to the seller last week. The Post Office cashier asked me how much it was worth. I told her I paid £279 for it, so she suggested me paying £13.35 for guaranteed compensation of up to £500 should the parcel go missing in transit, adding that it'd get there before 1pm within 2 days at the latest, with the receiver texting me to let me know the parcel had arrived. I paid it for peace of mind and everything went to plan, with the seller's supposed money back in 8 to 10 days being put back into my bank account only 2 days after letting me know they'd received the parcel. Everything went to plan, so I was happy with the service.
