This may be a stupid question, I don't know.

Long and short, I melted my lower head tube race when trying to remove a seat post (bad sealing on my part.) It was a shimano 600 headset. I have purchased a Dia compe 1" replacement, however it seems a waste to use it all and leave the 600 stuff in a box, (Especially when I assume the 600 was a far better headset) can I just replace the bit i melted,or maybe the whole bottom assembly and keep the top assembly or should it ideally all be the same?

(I do intend to buy a new/replacement 600 headset, but they seem to be £40+ even in bad nic, which seems excessive considering they are 30 years old.)

Firstly, may I encourage you to start a new post and tell us, pictures and all, how you melted your headset race whilst removing a seatpost?

Headset parts are not interchangeable. However, you can split them and have an Ultegra half on top and Dia-comp half at the bottom. I suggest you just fit Dia-comp both sides because Shimano 1" headsets are extinct and the few surviving ones are fetching prices that will make Christies soon consider selling them on auction.

Thanks for the link but I'm disappointed. I hoped some fire would have been involved, not just mere chemicals.

Half headsets have become kinda popular, if not a necessity. In the old days, headsets were the same size top and bottom. Now they are sometimes larger at the bottom than the top and sometimes the same oversize bottom to top. Further, the various styles I,e. integrated and semi-integrated, can be mixed on the same frame. For headset manufacuters to thus keep up with the multiple permutations is costly. It is far easier to sell half headsets.

Sorry to disappoint  I have some chemical burns on my foot if that helps? And some dead grass?

Cheers for the info, i just hope someone puts the top racer on alone so i can get it at a steal.
