This may be a stupid question, I don't know.
Long and short, I melted my lower head tube race when trying to remove a seat post (bad sealing on my part.) It was a shimano 600 headset. I have purchased a Dia compe 1" replacement, however it seems a waste to use it all and leave the 600 stuff in a box, (Especially when I assume the 600 was a far better headset) can I just replace the bit i melted,or maybe the whole bottom assembly and keep the top assembly or should it ideally all be the same?
(I do intend to buy a new/replacement 600 headset, but they seem to be £40+ even in bad nic, which seems excessive considering they are 30 years old.)
