i have been to a sports physio after having knee pain after running. She thinks I have a possible meniscal tear and have refered me to my doctor for an X-ray/mri. She also told me cycling should be fine, so yesterday I went out an cycle 10miles (the pain started around 8mile mark and today is agony to bend at all or put much pressure on).

Anyone got any tips on this? I am meant to be doing the rob Roy challenge in June - I'm fine with missing out the 16mile run but would really like to do the cycling - 56miles.

As no-one involved in your medical care knows for certain to what extent your knee is damaged, I'd wait until you get a diagnosis from the medics and seek advice from the sports physio and the medics afterwards.

Medial or lateral? How old are you? Did you have an injury to the knee or degenerate?

If you have pain and no biomechanical issues (locking, buckling) you may find concerted rest will help. See how it is in a month  If waiting on the NHS, it might take a while to get an MRI. X Ray won't show the meniscus issue

Ice it and try an anti inflammatory cream (my GP recommended me algesal rather than a voltaren or ibuprofen based one)

Cycling should be ok but stop if it's painful. I have lateral and medial degenerate tears in my left knee (and cartilage damage), I did 2500 miles last year including ride London

It's on the inside of my knee. I am 23, this is the first time Iv ever had any issues with my knees. I have been using ice but doesn't seem to really do much. Was told by my doctor that it could be up to a year to be seen! Then I'll be put on another list to wait for an mri if it's needed. I will try that cream out. Thanks

If you decide to ride again I suggest you use a knee sleeve

I've had a similar issue - partially torn medial collateral ligament and possibly a meniscal tear. At my appointment yesterday he was able to confirm that I have (nearly) a full range of movement and he manipulated the joint in such a way that a meniscal tear would have me crying in pain, whereas it wasn't nearly that bad. He now says short rides with no sprinting, and no mtb. A couple of miles commute this morning was plenty!
