So my Triban 3 has developed a pronounced 'clicking' sound which I think is coming from the headset. I can't see any play in the forks if I jam on the front brake and try and move the bike back and forth. How visible would it be? I tried tightening the hex key on the top a bit, but this doesn't seem to have made any difference. If I lift the bike and spin the front wheel it runs quietly enough, so I don't this the problem in in the wheel. What else can I try? And am I running the risk of doing more damage or having something fail miles from home if I continue to ride it until I can fix it?

The origin of sounds as I'm sure you are aware, can be very misleading.

The headset seems fine if you can't feel any play. But to rule it out you can give it a tweak.

Firstly - tightening the top cap doesn't do anything. The stem bolts lock things in place.

So undo the stem bolts attaching it to the steerer. Then tighten the top cap until you are happy that the steering is not rough.

Finally re-tighten the stem bolts and check for play.

If the problem persists you may need to take the headset apart.

Just to add, if the bearings are fine, it's usually worth greasing the split ring preload washer, it's a washer under the headset top cover, you need to remove the stem, then the cover, then you'll see a washer which is tight to the steerer and bearing.

They tend to get dry and can click.
