Hoping to visit the area with the bike this year. Can someone show me a map link for the hill please?

Tis a lovely part of the world.
Rather than taking the main road use the middle road which winds its way up through woodland, take a right turn at end of village.

Can't do a map link but it's the A39 immediately west of Porlock.

It is cyclable (upwards) if you don't mind replacing the chain afterwards. I did it many years ago. As in post 2 - there's a toll road to the north which is easier, and I can still manage it now.

Goolge Maps or Bing Maps will get you there if you type Porlock in the search

Porlock lol, my 206 had a hard job to get up it, beautiful village theres a camp site right at the bottem which a can recomend. As for the hill its unbelevable, in the village all you can smell is brakes from cars that have come down it, so have to see it to believe it, personally I wouldnt attempt it but thats just me, oh great pub in the village for food and drink The Ship.

Thanks for the replies. We have visited Porlock and the Weir before but I wasnt sure if "The Hill" was the main road or not. I think early on a quiet morning sounds a good time to give it a go.Will blow bubbles in my water bottles to make them a bit lighter.

hi

What about Dunkery Beacon. We take that in on the Exmoor Beast and the Exmoor Beauty which is in June. Great routes on both sides on a nice day!!

Well, write it down boy ......
Jeez, I remember ages ago going up Porlock Hill on a big motorbike and almost stalling it on a left hand hairpin. Gives me the shivers now, it was a big brute (the hill and the motorbike). Mind you I was young and foolish and hadn't seen the light at that time.

The bit to watch on the main road is the cattle grid about 2/3rds of the way up, especially if it's wet. The trick is to ensure you have enough momentum to glide over. Putting power in over a wet grid is asking for disaster (as, I gather, a few folk on the last Exmoor Beast learned - the hard way).

Have a great time, it's tough but brilliant cycling.......I have to say that I really love the route through the woodland.
