Bought a second hand childs bike - ridgeback mx14 seemed like a good spec etc.

Whilst cleaning it up, I noticed that the front wheel is held on with plastic wheel nuts. Now, I might be a bit old fashioned about this kind of thing and having the front wheel held on by a couple of bits of plastic does not sound like a good idea to me - even for a childs bike.

Is this common at this end of the market?

I suppose that the alternative is going round the bike shops and seeing if they will sell me a couple of traditional steel ones - or is this going to compromise things? - maybe there are like that for a reason?

the plastic nuts are used to cover the thread that sometimes extended past the metal nuts to save the little darlings from scratching themselves on.

Sounds like someones made a mistake when building it out of a box originally ( mail order purchase ?) but its not right, couple of £.s from any shop, even halfrauds.

Thanks festival, your posting reminds me that I have seen this before. The plastic nuts have flanges - currently they are facing in towards the wheel but they should be on the outside ends of the spindle.

Looks like a trip round the bike shops.

Teach me to look carefully at what turns up on trash bay.
