Correct. By the look of it being used to check for Pine Processionary Moths, which are an increasing problem in France.

My host tells me they are traps for the same, because once they get hold of a tree it's done for. (which explains why the full ones had black stuff in them - a bit like our fly / wasp traps at home)

They had a tree on the property here which had to be felled after an infestation
