Im still getting used to my new bike (boardman CX) but im finding that after around 7-8 miles, I start to get pins and needles in my left hand.

Ive tried changing hand positions more often in the lower miles but still keep getting it. I mainly ride on the hoods but do change hand positions regulary.

Any advise?

padded mits and occasional take the hand off the bar and flex your fingers

I occasionally get this myself. I use padded gloves, and have tried moving the sadle forward more so there is less weight on my arms; but it still sometimes occurs.
So I'd be interested if there is a better solution out there.

I would never move my saddle forward to decrease the reach to the bars. You risk ending up hurting your knees by sitting too far forward in relation to the BB.

Try raising the bars or maybe a shorter stem.

thanks for the replies.
I have tried both with mitts and without and still get the problem.

I dont think im holding too tightly although I do sometimes have to remind myself to loosen my grip, especially when going down hill

There goes my theory, then.

The two smallest fingers on my right hand used to go numb on long rides, and I realised it was because I was putting too much weight on the side of my hand and trapping a nerve, but it's obviously not that.

I have a similar problem. I bought some Spesh BG gloves which are very good but they alone didn't solve the problem. Last week I altered the levers slightly and dropped the seat pin about 1cm. There's been some improvement and I'm happy with that. I tried a stem raiser on last night's ride, (from Johnson Cycles, Stalybridge, on the understanding that if it didn't help, it could be returned). I returned the stem today, no improvement, in fact it was worse! I think I'll have to put up a little discomfort and move hand position the minute I feel it coming on, but those minor adjustments have helped.
Lulubel, I tend to get it in my left hand and I'm predominantly left footed, (football wise), so I suppose it could be that I'm tending to lean to that side, much the same when I'm climbing, I can feel the left leg doing the major push through for want of a better expression.

Your right hand moves more than your left, as you change your rear gears more frequently. If you aren't getting pins and needles in your right hand, simply try flexing your fingers on your left hand once every time you shift with the right hand. It worked for me, on the same bike too - though I'm sure that's a coincidence
