Does anyone else practice Pilates? What form - classical, dynamic, so called fitness Pilates?
Are any of you instructors?

I do, on a Monday evening, about a 75 minute session. I don't know what type though.

I've suffered from back problems for years (disc related).

Pilates is an excellent way of building up abdominal core muscles. I used to do it quite a bit, although sadly have got out of the habit.

It also benefits cycling as i find when cycling up hills, engaging the core muscles improves the efficiency of getting leg power into the pedals and you get a burst of speed.

Like minded people:smile:
Are you lying on a mat and using thoracic breathing to each exercise and doing the flow sequence? In which case it's probably classical pilates.
I've practised for a few years and there are still a few moves I can't master, rolling back namely.
It's more unusual for men to attend classes, even though my instructor is male.

Yes, I do a 90 minute session once a week. We have no more than 5 people in a group and we do mat and equipment work.

I'd not recommend the cattle market sports centre classes as you need a more personally tailored session to be most effective.

I'm still waiting for it's benefit in climbing hills, but i'm aware of engaging my core when riding. Or lifting anything heavy, changing gear in the car it even climbing the stairs. We use our core more than we think we do.
have you thought about going back to classes?

I'd love to find a smaller group and individual attention. Sometimes just a slight change in p positioning changes the while control of your body. I've just got to keep looking I guess.

Fast and careful!
I did a couple of terms of classic Pilates beginning of the year ,I'm a big fan, builds core and improves posture,I always get a pre course interview with instructor to talk about my aims and injuries and these are revisited every week,it has helped with stability strength for sure and stamina

I use Bonnie Southgate in Parkstone, Poole. Amazing she is. Shes also very 'bike aware' and many of her clients are cyclists of at all sorts of levels. She can tell week on week what I need by just watching me walk through the door!

Best £13 a week ever spent.

Shame she is isn't in Milton Keynes. I've used the same 2 instructors for a few years and am still making the same mistakes. Pilates for me has been very therapeutic on so many different levels, mind and body. Going off into a happy place, but not allowing the mind to wander where you don't want it to go. The physical side speaks for itself.
But I'm still making the same mistakes and not progressing to higher levels in certain exercises.
I have been going to Pilates classes on and off for about 3 years now. I didn't know there was different forms of it so I have just phoned up the teacher and she told me it is just Pilates concentrating on what the average person can do rather than advanced stuff - There is usually 6 or 7 of us in the class so the teacher manages to spend a reasonable bit of time with each of us. We do an hour of exercises plus 15 minutes stretching.

Have found it very useful in adopting a better posture and strengthening the core muscles. It has taken a long time but I seem to have finally got to the stage where I naturally engage my core muscles in everything that I do. Still have a bad back though :-(
I think some instructors take Joseph pilates theories more seriously than others and like to label their classes. Yours is probably more relaxed than my guy.
It's taken me a while to get the hang of thoracic breathing and controlling it with each movement.
Good luck with the back:smile:
