Piel Island

We are planning a Coast to Coast & return sometime next year and thought it may be fun to spend a night on Piel Island near Barrow in Furness. Has anyone been there, How did they cross, and is it safe to take a (loaded) bike over the sand at low tide.

I googled the ferry and it appears to take only foot passengers so that only leaves crossing at low tide. from aerial photos there are vehicles on the island and presumably, the Ship inn has deliveries so it must be possible.

This (see bottom of page) suggests there is also a ferry.

The ferry is a summer service only i think... but who knows, you might be able to pay anyone with a boat to take you across?
