Pie Plate

I've finally got round to ordering a new chain/ cassette. When I fit the new one it'll be easy to remove the so called 'pie plate' (I'll have Apple Rhubarb Apple Rhubarb Banoffe  ). So apart from stopping a poorly adjusted dérailleur throwing the chain into the wheel, does it do anything else?

No..that's about it really, stops the chain from getting between spokes and cassette and mangling your rear mech...

Not that I'm aware of, I haven't used one since the days of friction shifters. Are they even needed with modern shifters?

Meh, i thought the same, till the other week i'd been fitting new cables etc to the rear derailleur. Everything shifted ok while testing, but the first proper ride, i shifted onto the big cog at the back and...cling cling cling  of the mech banging into the spokes.
Stopped instantly because i knew what the implications are...but no harm done.

The funny thing is, i hadn't adjusted the screws, it hasn't happened since, it never happened before. Wierd.
Ive since fitted a new set of Fulcrums...based on the above, the disc went on, just for peace of mind.

KEEP IT! All it takes is a bit of leaf or twig or big pothole to send the chain off the big sprocket into the gap between cassette and wheel and you then get a very effective chainsaw action as your chain cuts into the spokes.

In my opinion it is more about protecting the spokes from the chain than keeping the rear mech out of the spokes which shouldn't happen unless the mech is bent, the hanger is bent or the adjustment screw is miles out of whack.

Live with the few extra grams and the jibes from your foolish peers and be happy in the security that the pie plate provides.
