This is a bit of an obscure thread. Few will be interested.

When you upload a picture to RWGPS it normally shows a little photo icon on the ride map showing where the picture was taken. Click on this icon and you can see the picture. Like this:

But it doesn't always do this. I find that pics from my phone work fine, but ones from my camera don't. They upload ok but don't get a location icon on the map.

At first I thought this was a geotagging issue. But my camera tags photos with GPS co-ords so it wasn't that.

It turns out that RWGPS uses the time taken from the uploaded picture file. It then cross checks that with the track log to figure out where the picture was taken.

My camera doesn't populate that field. But I found that if I manually set it correctly in the photo file, it all works ok.

I've been using a tool called PhotoRex to do that. It's not the greatest (doesn't allow time to be set to the second - at least not in the free version) but it works. I may figure out a better/easier way.

So if you've encountered this problem, now you know the cause, and a possible fix.

It is worth mentioning that if you don't want the world to know (for example) where you keep your stash of expensive bikes, remember to turn that off!

Only if you are in the habit of posting pictures of the location of your stash of expensive bikes for the world to see.

If you don't do that, there is no need to turn it off.

Or you have ever mentioned online that you have a stash of expensive bikes and subsequently innocently post a picture of a huge frog/scary insect/beautiful flower/(whatever) taken in your back garden...?

I remember a local semi-pro rider having all of her expensive bikes stolen overnight. The speculation was that the thieves knew exactly what they were going to pinch and where it was because they went straight to the outhouse holding the bikes and had a van to take them away.

Well, as we're talking criminality, one could also used a doctored gpx track and PhotoRex-ed photo to establish an alibi on RwGPS for a bank heist. Though I'm quite sure that's not what's being suggested here.

Me, I'm impressed by the curiousity, delve and endeavour that were required to figure it out and fashion a work around. So chapeau M Dogtrousers. And I say that as someone who likes to mess around with and understand the data in a gpx/tcx, and deduce how different sites (RwGPS,Strava,Garmin, etc) handle it.

RWGPS has the magic "Make everything private" button. Maybe Strava and other sites have similar.

I press it occasionally in case some things have slipped through the net.

I used to manually make links to some rides public when I posted in the Century challenges. I'd leave them that way for a week or so for anyone who was interested then close them down. I don't bother with that any more.

If I did have a stash of expensive bikes, which I don't, pictures on RWGPS would be the least of my worries.

I find that some of my routes on cycle.travel end up being public when I don't want them to be. I think that they should always default to being private unless individually made public.

Good RWGPS tip BTW though!
