Picking up after a short break. Always hard?

I started cycling for fitness and weight loss soon after Christmas. I had a long neglected hybrid bike hanging on the wall of the garage which I lumbered around on.

The first seven miles I did nearly killed me.......but a week or so later I was getting quicker and fitter already. With dieting as well, I had managed to drop two stone by the end of March which got me to my weight goal.

Meanwhile, as the cycling bug had bit I brought a Triban 3 and loved it. The weather was bloody awful but it didn't deter me from sunday morning rides and I was pushing distances up to 50 miles. My longest ride was 56 miles and I felt I had fuel left in the tank at the end.

With that confidence I decided to treat myself and enter a couple of sportives, one in June and one in August. They are 86 and 96 miles respectively. But here comes the problem......in the middle of April we headed off on holiday for two weeks and while we did plenty of walking I had no cycle time at all!

And since being back, it all seems to have gone and doesn't want to come back! I've been a bit busy and so have only managed a couple of lunchtime rides (about 15 milers) and one weekend ride (30 miles but it felt terrible). In fairness I have played football on a couple of lunchtimes as well which has also been a bit laboured. The problem is that my hamstrings feel tight and unco-operative at best!

Is this normal? And how should I combat it? It's horrible to have a set back so soon in one's cycling adventure!

This is perfectly normal, only way to sort it is get back out on the bike & battle through the pain barrier & you'll soon be powering onto your 50 milers before you know it !
Good luck with your upcoming Sportives aswell

I've done very little for about 6 months TBH, then I went out last Sunday and did 40 miles, but it very nearly finished me off, I literally pootled the last 10 miles with regular breaks, and very nearly rang Mrs S to come and get me!

I got home put the bike away and really thought my days were numbered, but then I went for a short run on Wednesday night and now I'm feeling better.

I know the next few rides will still be hard, but I'll keep my mileage and pace lower and ease myself back in.

The ratio of losing fitness versus building it always makes me want to cry, it's just not fair:cry:

The main thing is just keep cycling, don't push it in one go, just build up the miles and you will be back to doing those 50 mile rides again.

Don't sweat it!

In a couple of rides time it will come back? Don't push too hard on your first few rides after a break. Just steadily get into riding regularly again. Your earlier training won't be wasted - you just need to peel back the top layers of laziness to unveil the fitness hiding underneath.

Take the long view........
At least 2 weeks. Just like the 2 weeks of lay off.

Thanks for all the support! Hopefully this weekend will bring out those easier miles.

I've also had a go on a foam roller on those tight leg muscles and it seems to have worked wonders!
