Am considering doing the short route (65 miles) on the Phil Liggett challenge this Sunday. Have done the Cat & Fiddle (Brian Rourke) ride a few times without too much trouble and just wondered how the rides compare and how the climbs compare ? Cheers

it's a toughie - the long route takes in the 3 hardest climbs in the Peaks - Cat & Fiddle, Holme Moss & Winnats Pass - I think the shorter route misses out one of those climbs

if you've done the Cat & Fiddle before with no problems then you should be ok if you pace yourself well - don't attack the early climbs too hard and drink plenty as I cramped up pretty bad after Winnats

Holme Moss is a bit like the Cat & Fiddle climb, long and draggy - not too steep

Winnats is a brute - steep and unrelenting - though it's over relatively quickly

enjoy the ride, I did it last year and it was really friendly - had a good chat with Phil on the way round, nice bloke

I did it too last year, but I do not think the "Cat and Fiddle" is one of the climbs, if I recall there is seven big climbs, but I never noticed about three of them. Monsal Head, is one of the climbs and a bit of a struggle and one can not give up on that one due to all the people at the top looking down at you which you are not really aware of till you get to the top, then there is the one after the reservoir towards the end.

I did plan on doing it this year and got this weekend off on leave, but came to conclusion its got too expensive like a lot of rides now. Fortunatly though I would have struggled as I seemed to have picked up an infection and my heart rate is way high as I found out last weekend and this morning on club ride and gasping for breath.

Winnats would have killed me.

There are some quite tough little climbs beside the well known ones, plus a few long, relentless drags.

This is not an easy ride by any means.

I did this at the weekend, it was tough, only did the short route, but I am going to write a review this weekend, as it was an eye opener.

The descent off Holme Moss was truly terrifying...
