I've told someone I will give their old peugeot a clean up (it was going in the bin as the gears and the brakes 'don't work'. I think part of the problem is ancient cables which are sticking as well as the bike being generally glued up with grease and mud.

I digress - before I change the cables I was after some tips on threading the brake cable through the down tube. I've read an online FAQ and this really put me off!

Internal cabling can be a little complicated - my approach is to leave the inner wire in place, remove the old outers and then thread new outers into place then I cut the nipple off the old inner and push it out from the top by threading the new inner into the outer.

With older steel frames you might get lucky and find that there's a sleeve inside the frame for the cable. If not, go to a good engineering supplies shop and get a metre of CUNIFER tube that's used for car brake pipes. (CU NI FER = Copper/Nickel/Iron) It has a 1.5 mm internal diameter, perfect for bike cables and can be bent to go round the tricky bits.

I did what @mrandmrspoves suggested when I got my Peugeot, the brake cables were sticky, took the outer cable off, then threaded the new one over the old inner cable. Then I was able to feed the new inner through without any problems.

Having said that though, after I'd resprayed the frame I was able to get a new outer cable through the inner routing without too much swearing.

Often easiest to thread the inner through and use that as a guide for the outer.

i spent about 2 hours one night trying to re cable a rear brake on a Pug once as previous owner had run cable on outside of frame with cable ties !

so with no cable as a guide i had to go blind it was a nightmare so leave inner or outer in place and go from there it should be easy peasy

I bought an old frame that had no cables, so I couldn't use the old outer to guide my new cable. So I took away the rubber grommit from the frame to make the hole bigger, then threaded the new inner in. I then used a magnet to fish out the inner from the other hole. Once the inner was through it was an easy matter to pop the outer over it followed by the grommits. Hope the makes sense. Overall not to hard to do.
