Hihi,

I've got a peugeot equipe which needs a new back wheel. I quite like the original cassette, and it seems still okay to use. however, I couldn't find information on the type of wheel I need to get in order to keep the cassette (it's a 5 speed, and bit of an unconventional style). Does someone have some advice on what type of wheel to get, or does someone have experience with old peugeots?

Thanks!

Probably a multiple freewheel not a cassette. Is there a size on the tyre?

It could be a 5 speed cassette, Shimano did make one but it could also be a screw on freewheel.
Piccies would help but you may be as well going to a decent bike shop (preferably one with an old guy working in it, he'd know at a glance)

Usually the easiest way visually to tell if you have a freewheel or cassette is look at the hub...cassettes /freehub versions will have a bulge in the hub body....freewheels have a more or less parallel hub body.
Some early french freewheels have a french thread, not compatible with 'normal' threads.

Thanks for your quick replies!
So it's a 700x25 tyre. I am not an expert on cassettes, but as far as I am aware it's a cassette rather a multiple freewheel. I attached a couple of pictures, which hopefully show how the parts fit together.

Thats got to be a freewheel. Ideally you need to get it off first which is either a trip to your LBS, they'll identify the exact type(french or not)...or get a removal tool yourself.
Or...buy a new wheel and a 'standard', non french freewheel which will be far more readily available.

BTW, I got a screw on type 700c rear wheel, solid axle, from my LBS, budget quality a couple years ago for circa £20.
Budget wheels can be ok but I have always stripped the hub and greased and properly adjusted them before fitting...they're not always lubed or adjusted particually well from the factory but once ive serviced them, theyve lasted well.

I'd say it was a freewheel too, good news is it looks like you have clearance for a 6 speed if the rear gears need to be changed but TBH they look to be in good nick. Maybe the wheel could be repaired though if it just needs a spoke or 2 and re-truing.

Helicomatic?
Be easier getting another wheel and conventional screw on 5 or 6 speed freewheel
