Back when I was looking for the classic Raleigh that turned into my SPD Retromod build, I got this idea into my head that I also fancied a Peugeot PX10. I don't know why, but in my tiny mind it seemed like a complementary pairing, given that my partner Kay basically rides the same size of frame I do. We could ride a pair of 'classics' that would take the emphasis off always hammering around The Fen Edge on every ride.

Yesterday evening, I saw what turned out to be the title bike of this thread on FB advertised for a mere £90. Worse still, it was less than two miles from my place of work so I bought it. The listing was sufficiently vague that it was hard to tell exactly which model it was, but I could see the French Reynolds 531 Professional decals and shot-in seat stays and decided it was worth the risk. The Raleigh was near double that and turned out alright, so why not.

It's not a PX10, but it's close enough. I think I now own a 1987 Peugeot Avaris PW10 (?) equipped with 14-speed Shimano 600 (Ultegra?) groupset and at least one contemporary 105 hub/Mavic MA40 rimmed wheel. The Raleigh had the same gruppo and in worse condition and that sold individually for a total not far short of what I paid for this bike, so I'm not going to lose on the deal. Result.

However, whilst I post-moderned the Raleigh with Campag Veloce for the retro look with modern functionality, I've half a mind to do a pure restoration job on this bike. Okay, a 42/28 bottom gear is not without its disadvantages, but The Fen Edge is basically flat and it's not like I don't have other bikes for rides with hills. Even as I type this, I can feel myself talking myself into this...

The bike porn pictures will follow, but I'd like to ask the hive mind of the forum for anything that might be known about this particular model.

The frame number is: 87 1 96595. Eight digits apparently indicate '80s, 87 equals 1987 and 1 indicates January. The interweb Peugeot knowledge does not seem to indicate any more, unlike the endless repository for Raleigh.

The seller used to be a tri-athelete ( into rowing these days) and bought it off his coach who used to race at a useful national level in the late '80s/early nineties, I'm told. Fair play, that chimes with the spec and the seller says the rear wheel was knackered when he got it and it spent most of its life bolted to a turbo.

There is a decal on the top tube that says "Hand braised by xxxxx" which may or may not be unusual and if I recall correctly, 531 Pro is basically 531 Competition with a 753 rear triangle? Certainly the quality of braising on the seat/chain stays to the Simplex drop-outs is the equal of the SPD Raleigh, as in bloody tidy.

Please let me know if you know different on any of the points above or can add anything further.

You have a beautiful high end Peugeot there and what a bargain!
I would expect to pay at least £250 for that bike and I’m a tight Yorkshire man!

Very nice and you’ve got the 600 tricolour (Ultegra) group set which is the same as I have on my Alan, only exception being the seat post and pedals.
Interesting to note that the only french thing on it are the dropouts compared to earlier Pugs where everything was french, even a British Reynolds frame, sacre blue.

Great find. Still goes to show there are still little gems out there that eventually surface.😎👍

Ohh very nice:okay:

Funnily enough I used to have a PY10 which I bought when looking for a Raleigh. Mine was the 1980 model and built with 531SL (cool French Reynolds transfers with the 531 in French).

As I understand it 531 Pro was the successor to 531SL and is thinner walled than 531

I moved mine on as, while it was lovely to ride, it was, in my view, a bit light for the beating I was giving it at Eroica and Retro Ronde

I'm trying to figure out what to do with mine.

One thing is clear is that the frame needs some TLC. It's perfectly straight, but at some point it has spent some [wasted] time on a turbo. Salty sweat has delivered unacceptable amounts of rust under the top tube that use of the word 'patina' will not save without further action.

On the one hand, the SPD Raleigh is a full retromod with a completely restored frame and modern(ish groupset) making it entirely applicable for the Thursday night with-a-pub club ride and indeed moderate paced rides of any distance. It has done a 100 mile ride, which was the genesis of consigning my carbon frame to history. Long story short; my arse was in better shape on the Raleigh after a century than it ever had been on the carbon bike.

On the other hand, a quick spin round the block on the Peugeot indicates that even despite the superannuated groupset and wheels, it's an altogether more responsive ride than the softly-softly 531c Raleigh SPD. The Raleigh will hold speed when you get there, but the Pug seems to enjoy getting there faster. Part of me is thinking that the Pug should take the retromod mantle with the modern groupo and the Shimano 600 Tricolore (along with some MA40 tribute TB14 rimmed wheels from The Cycle Clinic) should should hit the Raleigh for pootling about.

It's a first world eighties retro issue! However, all viewpoints accepted and invited.
