Hi all.
New to the forum:smile:
Need some advice from you experts.

I have acquired a Peugeot 103 carbolite racer in a sad state.

The rear 5 speed Simplex gears, are, well, knackered:sad:. The spring action is gone and it looks as if it has broken free from the frame and just spins.

Can I replace this with a "normal" derailleur. Perhaps even this one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....ksid=p3907.m29&_trkparms=algo=LVI&its=I&otn=1, or can anyone give me link to one that might work. The bike is a 10 speed by the way.

Thanks for any reply on this.
Andy.

Any rear mech will work as your gears are not indexed. The five speed screw on block looks long dead and that will need replacing too, again ebay will be your best bet as I doubt these are made anymore.

The steel rim looks pretty knackered as well. Not worth spending more than pocket money on.

5 speed screw-ons are at Halfords.

That's a tall frame. Hope its the correct size, or you will be wasting money.
You will spend more than the bike will be worth.

Why is the rear gear cable INSIDE the seatstay?

To be honest the Peugeot 103 carbolite wasn't the best frame in it's day. Its arguably not worth spending much money on.
The whole rear wheel looks like it's seen better days!

You need to carefully work out which bits need to be replaced. Once you start having to buy a rear mech, chain, new freewheel, new cables, new wheel(?), new tyres... things will soon start getting expensive.

I would just fit a single speed sprocket and bin the gears.

Only keep this bike if the frame is the perfect fit for YOU.

If it isn't, you will regret spending on an ill-fitting frame.

Yes, the Carbolite wasn't the best frame. It was mass produced 'sports' bike "pile of shoot".
Even so, if you have a frame that has the correct measurements and angles, ergonometry will offset the extra weight.

Carbolite 103 is heavy and flexy, but it does make for a comfy ride if you wanted to turn that into a single speed commuter.

I did it as a project and ended up spending £250, although half of that was the wheels. Nicer than an off the shelf fixie though.

They weren't great bikes. That said I used one as a commuter for a few years and it did the job. The wheels on it were terrible tho'.

Cheadle Hulme: You sure polished that turd.

Thanks for all the replies guys:biggrin:

Its just a toy that I picked up for nowt. I like fixing things up-dont care what they are.

I may chuck a gear off a scrappy on it and see what it feels like.

Much appreciated replies though.

Andy.

PS Nice bike Cheadle!
