Dont really clean my chain that much but if I did i think petrol would possibly be one of the cheapest ways to do so compared to other solvents!

A 50/50 mix of petrol and diesel works brilliantly, apart from the fag of having to buy two containers and mixing them.

Petrol/diesel is possibly one of the dearer solvents. I also find white spirit and an old paint brush very effective and much easier to buy and store in the quantities required (I admit I haven't done the sums but I assume white spirit will be cheaper than petrol?)
Petrol and diesel are quite unpleasant if got onto the skin and have possible health risks from absorbtion.

I use whatever is handy, petrol, diesel, white spirit, kerosene, parrafin and even washing up liquid neat. The only issue I have had with petrol is, my chain cleaner fell to bits as it warped it badly, petrol and some plastics don't mix

please, don't use petrol for cleaning parts! It has such a low flash point, that the least little spark can ignite it, and then flash back to the container that you are working in. You can seriously burn yourself, or burn down your workshop.

Actually petrol burns or ignites quite poorly, it's the vapour that burns. I find that it tends to eat toothbrushes though. When I can get time I use one of the spray on degreasers then relube. I just find it easier to store and use and worth the extra cost.

i also use white spirits but always make sure garage door open !

also use baby wipes very good

white spirit is my solvent of choice - about £ 3.60 for 2.0l wilkinson so not as cheap as petrol
