With the current 'I'm a celeb..." whats the perception of Personal Trainers -- e.g. Carly Z's 'profession' -- out there on the street....?

I do a bit of PT work to top up my 9-5 job but am thinking of doing full time soon. There's a fair bit of demand for good trainers.

Like any speacilist area its not until your involved with it that you know how much you don't know.

I think many people think it'd be stupid to pay someone to work with you, when you can go to the gym on your own, but if you walk into any gym and look at some of the dangerous techniques people use you'd see a need.

A good pt will allow you to spend less time working out and produce faster results.

So what techniques are dangerous? I don't have a personal trainer, but I do have a personal exercise programme designed by one of the trainers at the gym of which I am a member. They seem good to me but I've no way of telling.

I've seen a few taking groups in our local park and it looks comical to me. I can only suppose that it's a motivational thing for people too lazy to do excercise themselves.

I watched a dodgy sci-fi thriller the other night - Xchange. The plot was about people swapping bodies with other people (i.e. their bodies stayed where they were but the minds got to go away on business, on holiday, whatever). In one scene a businessman got a personal trainer's mind to take over his body and exercise it for him on a treadmill, while his mind got to chill out behind his desk in the trainer's body. I can think of quite a few people who would go for that option if it was available !

So what techniques are dangerous?

Not the techniques themselves but the way they are performed. i will often see people with less than straight backs and swinging weights in order to lift more.

The programs a gym instructor will give you will be fine to start with, but how often is it reveiwed or updated.

Most personal trainers are well qualified, often to degree standard and that gives them the ability to tailor programs to peoples needs very specifically.

If you were to play pretty much any other sport you would look for instruction so why not the gym....
