Hi. Looking for other riders in my area for regular outings. I'm not too fit yet, have done a 36 mile sponsored run last October. I'll only get fitter if I have regular runs I think and getting into a group seems the right way.

Road, trails or off-road are all fine, just want to increase my fitness, lose a stone and have fun. Happy to drive to join the group of course.

Been riding an ageing Giant, but should get my spanking new Planet X Kaffenback soon.... 

Mick, I've seen the Birdwell Wheelers up at Royd Moor cafe a couple of times - and they're near you.

I'm in Dewsbury - which is a bit further north. There's riders in Sheffield though on here - check the Members map.

Birdwell seem a friendly club. Their club rides seem to be too far for me though, for now. I'd hate to ruin a club ride by lagging behind or not finishing.

I'm looking for regular social rides of about 20 to 30 miles to begin with, 10 to 15 mph , regular stops for breath/drinks/cake. Focus on social, plenty of mutual encouragement. Motivation to get the distance up.

If anyone wants to join me I'm happy to plan routes and organise. Plan on starting maybe Sunday 29th Jan.

Anyone interested?

I'm tending to do a 50 mile run on Saturdays; Dewsbury-Mirfield-Grange Moor-Emley Mast-Kirkburton-Shelley-Royd Moor and Windmill Cafe for break. Then the same route back.

Previously I'd been going to Sid's Cafe in Holmfirth, which works out at 35 miles.

I'm open to other routes though. Commuting into Leeds by bike I'm aware there's not much in terms of routes south of the city. Where are you at?

Dewsbury, the same.

That's pretty much the same as me really. I'm very close to working up to that distance too.

It just depends which way I go to get up near Emley, whether it be through Hopton, Thornhill/ Netherton (or Middlestown) or Bradley lights and up Bog Green Lane.

I really can't see any other direction to go really to get a decent loop, if I went Hebden Bridge way i'd skirt very close to either Halifax or Bradford which isn't fun riding (done that, too busy!).

A little loop I saw was to go to Bradley and turn right there eventually ending up near Marsden/ Slaithwaite and looping back around Holmfirth so as to avoid Huddersfield but i'm not quite ready for the 60/70 miles which that would be yet. Not sure what the traffic is like near Ainley Top but here looks to be some big M62 turnoffs.

edit, you may have seen me around. A young skinny thing wearing a team sky jersey!

There aren't many loops that don't involve a) big hills and/or b) lots of traffic. Ainley Top isn't nice most days even in a car unfortunately and I've been doing my best to avoid Bradford. I do need to get used to going up Holme Moss for the Kirklees Sportive so I'll be looking at a new route involving that climb soon.

I might have seen you about - there aren't many others in the area. I tend to vary the clothing since I'm not as young but now much skinnier. However I've always got a white helmet with green stripes. I'm also commuting into Leeds on a red Carrera this winter rather than my normal Ridgeback Platinum. Now that's not a good route.

I usually have a ride buddy who wears an old American National Champ Jersey too. Eyes peeled for a green and white helmet lol.

It's just heavy traffic I want to avoid, i'm not too bothered about hills. I haven't been to Holmfirth yet so that's deffo on my hit list! The nearest i've been was Denby Dale/ Shepley and I took the main road down into Hudds, missed Rowley lane to go back to the GM roundabout, straight through fartown, brighouse, then back home via Willow Valley Golf Club near Clifton. A challenging ride but far too busy! had to pavement it through Hudds it was chocca with about 4 lanes to get across! Awful.

The road from Huddersfield to Holmfirth's not bad - there's a cycle lane for some of it. I tend to take either the route from Mirfield via 3 Nuns or there's the National Cycle Network path from Mirfield to Huddersfield which is OK but slower and then a dedicated cycle lane .

Back - I either reverse it or I'll use that route before Holme Moss.

One thing though; traffic doesn't bother me too much. Commuting out of Leeds from the White Rose to the M62 is probably as bad as it gets, with :cursing: drivers.

I'm out Saturday am / Sunday pm though, rather than Sunday am which might make things quieter?

It's probably because I haven't been riding for very long that i'm not comfortable in traffic. I have gone through Bradford a few times to the Queensbury area after getting off at the top of the Spen Cycle Way. It's might just be that it isn't enjoyable to be constantly trying not to get run over but now my rides are getting longer I can't avoid it forever!

Bradford can be a bit bad. I went up the Spen Valley cycle way on New Year's Day on the MTB, but tend not to use them.

It's probably more about finding quieter roads to use, which is why I avoid the A-roads on a non-commute where possible. The Hudds-Holmfirth A-road is quiet enough though on most days and there's enough cyclists for drivers to take notice.

Mind you, the new neon Gore overshoes seem to make me more obvious; http://www.wiggle.co.uk/gore-bike-wear-oxygen-so-neon-overshoes/ :becool:
