Hello

I have recently been looking at clipless pedals and don't know much about them. Do any of you have them or tried them? Which ones are good which are rubbish?

Look at the 'General Cycling' listing, second down sticky 'Clipless Pedals FAQ'

Out of curiousity, does anyone know why pedals that you 'clip' into are always reffered to as 'clipless'?

FWIW I don't refer to them this way, I always say, "I use Speedplay pedals" or "I use SPD-SL pedals"
I feel better now that's off my chest

I believe it's because "clipped" pedals refer to toe clips (straps), therefore modern pedals with SPD type attachments are refereed as clipless, and normal pedals as open or flat.

I use SPD pedals and cleats. You can walk in the shoes ok and if you get multi-directional cleats they release if unclipped in different directions. Also the pedals are double sided meaning you can clip in from either side.

If you rememeber you have them on there is no real reason to fall. After a while it becomes second nature. All in all I wouldn't be without them and I'm very new to cycling.

Having said that I am probably setting myself up for a 'clipless moment'.

Cos 'clips' refers to old-stylee toe-clips (+straps). You don't have them with SPDs (etc) so hence 'clipless'. But you still clip in and clip out, though I guess you could 'click'. Or in my case 'fumble'.

I use Shimano M520's - they're double sided and you can get them for about £15 off ebay. They work fine for me. I refuse to refer to them as 'clipless' because a cursory examination shows that they have a clip on each side of the pedal. One day the world will come around to my way of thinking.

You could always refer to them as 'clip in' - see wiki
